Maverick
Street Gate to Begin Operations in April; Authorized Access for
Emergency Vehicles and East Boston Residents Only
March 4, 2008
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today
announced that beginning on or about April 15, 2008 an automated
gate will restrict nearly all vehicular traffic from accessing Logan
International Airport via Maverick Street in East Boston. The gate
will keep nearly all airport and Ted Williams Tunnel traffic off
neighborhood streets. East Boston residents will still be able to
gain access to the airport and the Ted Williams Tunnel in their
personal automobiles if they have a Massport-issued access card. No
access cards will be issued for commercial vehicles
East Boston residents must request an application
for an access card by calling Massport’s Maverick Street Gate
Message Center at 617-568-3718. The application process, which
mirrors the requirements of the City of Boston’s resident parking
program, requires that individuals provide proof of residency in
East Boston. Applicants must submit copies of a current
Massachusetts’ RMV registration showing that their automobile is
registered, and principally garaged in East Boston, and a recent
utility or phone bill with the same East Boston address as the motor
vehicle registration. Residents can apply for one card for each
automobile owned. Emergency vehicles will have unrestricted access
to the Maverick Street gate.
“The new Maverick Street Gate will help further
mitigate the impacts of Logan Airport on our East Boston neighbors,”
said Thomas J. Kinton, Jr., CEO & Executive Director of Massport.
“Logan-associated traffic will be greatly reduced throughout the
Jeffries Point area, particularly on Maverick Street.”
The new gate is a part of Massport’s multimillion
dollar Airport Edge Buffer Program. The Airport Edge Buffer Program
is an effort by the Authority to provide passive recreation areas
and airport screening for neighbors living near Boston Logan
International Airport.
The edge buffers, which include the Navy Fuel
Pier, the Bayswater Embankment, and the perimeter of Logan’s
Southwest Service Area, are part of a 1997 Community Mitigation
Agreement.
