Saturday, October 30th, is your big chance.
Alfaro Market, located on the corner of Sumner and
Cottage Streets, will be hosting a Community Feast Day, complete
with a scavenger hunt for grains, dancing vegetables, and more!
The day is part of a “Healthy on the Block” community campaign to
bring healthier food to corner store markets. Sponsored in part by
the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, the Strategic Alliance
for Health, and the Boston Public Health Commission, the event will
kick off at 11 AM with a scavenger hunt and sign-decorating
activities. A cooking demonstration by Kathy Cunningham, a
registered dietician, will emphasize how to easily prepare healthy
and affordable meals with ingredients available at corner stores.
Live music by East Boston legend El Gallito de Oro and a performance
by Vegetable Circus will contribute to the celebration. “Food is
fun, delicious, and an incredibly important part of our health and
community,” said Cait Van Damm, co-coordinator of the event. “We
want this feast day to not only be a celebration of food and the
people who provide it, but also to spark a conversation on how we in
the East Boston community can come together and bring more fruits
and vegetables into our local stores.”
A potluck feast will follow at Church of the Assumption, located at
404 Sumner Street. At 12:00, a drum line parade lead by members of
ZUMIX, an East Boston music arts coalition, will kick off Trick or
Treating on Sumner St. towards the church. All are invited to fill a
bag, share a homemade dish or just join in on the good eats!
Community members will be leading informal discussions on
neighborhood priorities around food and health.
