The following is a letter from East Boston Main Streets in
support of the East Boston branch library at Orient Heights.
Dear Library Trustees,
On behalf of East Boston Main Streets we are writing to express our
disappointment and opposition to any branches of the library being
closed. We are encouraging everyone to contact the mayor and elected
officials to voice their opposition to closing libraries. In
particular the East Boston branch at Orient Heights. At your recent
neighborhood meeting in East Boston you heard testimony from young
and old of the importance of both branches remaining open in East
Boston.
The branches are a lifeline of communication within the community.
Services to the parents and schoolchildren in East Boston as well as
adults are part of the fabric of the neighborhood. Given the most
important aspect of a strong community is to have an educated
population, we feel that closing branches is short-sighted and will
have a negative long term affect on the quality of life in East
Boston.
New immigrants and their children are
particularly vulnerable since the library is an oasis for learning
English and staying in school.
Additionally East Boston is geographically separated from the rest
of the city. The branches are strategically located to serve the
whole community and were placed there for that purpose. Your
recommendation to close the Orient Heights branch will cut services
to half of the neighborhood and will have a long-term negative
impact on the neighborhood.
On this eve of your decision we implore you to reconsider the affect
of your actions and find a way to keep the branches open.
Respectfully,
Clark J. Moulaison
Executive Director
