Sailing season opens at Piers Park: Center begins its 15th year on Boston Harbor and the Islands
BOSTON (May 11, 2010) – Piers Park Sailing Center, the
closest non-profit and recreational sailing center to downtown
Boston, today announced the opening of its 2010 sailing season.
Located at the heart of Boston Harbor in Boston’s newest
award-winning waterfront park, Piers Park Sailing offers world-class
sailing throughout Boston Harbor and the Harbor Islands to adults of
all ages and abilities, including the physically and cognitively
disabled through its nationally-recognized adaptive sailing center
led by 2008 Paralympic Gold Medalist Maureen McKinnon-Tucker.
“There is no better way to experience Boston this summer,” said Mat
Rosa, executive director of Piers Park Sailing. “Whether you join
our evening racing club or prefer day and sunset cruises through the
Boston Harbor Islands, Piers Park Sailing will show you a Boston
you’ve never known before.”
Piers Park Sailing offers individual and corporate club memberships,
and with adult club memberships for $595 annually and student
memberships for $395 annually, Piers Park Sailing is not only the
most conveniently located sailing on Boston Harbor, it’s the most
affordable.
Led by champion and Olympic sailors, Piers Park Sailing also
provides private and group instruction for those interested in
trying sailing for the first time on one of the world’s finest
harbors to seasoned experts looking to hone their racing or cruising
skills, or weekend and sunset boaters looking to enjoy the splendor
of the Harbor Islands National Park.
The Piers Park fleet includes twenty 23-foot Sonar keelboats equally
at home cruising coastal waters and rounding buoys. Inducted into
the sailboat hall of fame in 2004, these popular one-design classics
are exciting to race but easy to handle by sailors of all ages and
skill levels. Their large cockpits comfortably accommodate up to
five passengers and crew – plenty of room for friends and family –
and Sonars are raced all over the United States and the world from
Canada to the Caribbean to the South Pacific. The Sonar has also
been a Paralympic class since 2000.
Piers Park Sailing’s adult program also helps underwrite one of the
city’s premier youth development programs, which serves more than
700 of the city’s most at-risk youth every year. Piers Park Sailing
offers these young people an opportunity of a lifetime to experience
adventure in Boston Harbor and the Islands along with a
comprehensive curriculum of learning, enrichment and personal
development.
