FIGHT LEAD CONTAMINATION: HELP
EB'S YOUNG
The Lead Action Collaborative - is planning a big
community volunteer day in Piers Park on Saturday May 2nd.
The Lead Action Collaborative (LAC) has been
committed to ending childhood lead poisoning in Boston’s high risk
neighborhoods for the past fifteen years. Through work with our
dedicated community partners, including area nonprofits, agencies,
and foundations, we have seen tremendous success in lowering the
numbers of children with elevated blood lead levels in Boston. LAC
is continuing to focus our efforts on those populations and
properties most in need.
East Boston has emerged as a high risk neighborhood for lead
poisoning due to a significant number of children with elevated
blood lead levels in recent years. On May 2, 2009, LAC will be
holding a Community Volunteer Day in East Boston, with the goal of
increasing awareness of this environmental health issue as well as
engaging the local community in LAC’s efforts. Over 100 volunteers
will convene in East Boston to assist LAC in implementing our
Community Assessment Tool to identify properties in East Boston most
likely to poison a child. As East Boston has only recently emerged
as a priority high risk neighborhood, there has only been limited
outreach conducted there in the past. This event serves to bring
attention to the issue of lead poisoning in East Boston, as well as
engage community members in service.
The event will go from 9:30 - 2:00 pm and food and t-shirts will be
provided. Senator Petruccelli and Rep. Basile have both confirmed
their attendance at the Event Kickoff.
This is a great volunteer opportunity for East
Boston residents and I'd like to get the word out further.
