Statement jesse m. kahn : intimacies in 1994 my grandmother showed me four polaroid photographs of her garden: wild, complicated images made more intriguing for their grainy, almost abstract, material. I immediately bought a polaroid camera and set out to extract from it the elements I found so compelling in my grandmothers images of her overgrown, back-to-nature front yard. these pieces are intimate in many senses: small in scale, meant to be enjoyed individually by an individual, these images are not a group event or experience; lush and sensual, they are meant to evoke pleasure as a theme and to give pleasure to their viewer, the fields of color and the play of light should be enjoyed; personal in that they were created to address questions and concerns I had about art and abstraction. i am indebted, gratefully, to many people for their support; my parents, especially my mother whose love of the east wing gallery in Washington rivals only my own, for showing me that art is important, and that abstract art is real art; my grandmothers for being wild and expressionistic artists themselves, and for sharing that with me; and to ruth and chris and ann for being artists with me. I also owe special thanks to two very different people; my great aunt annette, whose spirit infuses this show, for showing me that art can be a formal exercise that is also fun, that ones own art should be looked at every day in ones own home, and for showing me that a real person can be a real artist; and, finally, to david, my love, for having a romantic vision of me as an artist, even when I had lost it myself. inquiries: please contact danielle tully at 617-568-9777 or jesse m. kahn at 617-569-4907 or jmk@jessekahncreative.com |
