Atlantic Works Gallery at 80 Border
Street in East Boston presents EGGSCAPES: photography by Anna
Salmeron and Elsa Campbell on exhibit from June 5th through
June 29th. Anna Salmeron is showing color photographic series
and large-scale color prints; Elsa Campbell is exhibiting toned and
altered black & white photographs and artists books.
Starting with the idea of the egg as
an icon, each artist has moved in different direction to explore the
evocative power of this symbol. Salmeron has created a series of
abstract photographs using close-ups of eggs, as well as time exposures
of the moon. The prints are attached magnetically to a metal base, and
the viewer is invited to participate in the work by re-arranging the
prints. The series represents a personal lunar calendar and a visual
interpretation of the suggestive meaning of the creation myth.
Campbell has created small-scale
black and white prints, also in a series. The prints are toned and
altered to obscure the images of eggs in the landscape or with the human
body. She has also created a group of artists books made of handmade
paper and egg shells. The books incorporate text from the Tao Te Ching.
These pieces speak to a world in chaos and use the egg as a universal
symbol of creation and beginning anew.
The public is invited to attend the
opening reception on Thursday June 5th, from 6-8pm. Gallery
hours are Thursdays from 5-8pm for the month of June, or by appointment.
Atlantic Works Gallery is a new
exhibition space in East Boston with spectacular views of Boston Harbor.
Along with monthly art exhibitions, the gallery hosts an informal get
together every third Thursday of the month from 6-8pm. Open to the
public, this monthly event is a time for artists and friends to come
together to share ideas, look at art and plan future arts events for the
East Boston community.
With a growing number of artists
settling in the neighborhood, East Boston is beginning to foster a
thriving artist community, not unlike Fort Point. Growing out of the
East Boston Artists Group (EBAG), Atlantic Works Gallery is the newest
manifestation of this trend. EBAG was formed in 1999 by a group of
neighborhood artists, and has grown to nearly 70 artist members. EBAG
sponsors the annual East Boston Open Studios in October, which showcases
the member’s studios and artwork.
Directions: Take the Blue line to
Maverick Station. Turn left on Maverick Street, go 5 short blocks to
Border Street. Take a right, #80 is on the left side of the street.
