ZUMIX and the East Boston Artists Group present La Noche
Cubana/Cuba Night!
ZUMIX and the East Boston Artists Group are proud to present La
Noche Cubana/Cuba Night ! at ZUMIX on Thursday May 2nd
from 6pm to 9pm. The event will feature a slide presentation of contemporary Cuban art, a
history of rap music in Cuba, and live Cuban music by ZUMIX musicians.
Catherine Bowen, a member of the East Boston Artists Group and drawing
professor at Brandeis University and UMass/Lowell will present a slide lecture entitled
"Contemporary Cuban Art: Selected Artists". Ms. Bowen also teaches art in Cuba
through the Putney Student Travel programs. Her paintings and works on paper are on view
at Zumix through May.
"Hip Hop Havana: A History of Rap in Cuba" will be presented by
professors Reebee Garafolo and Deborah Pacini Hernandez. This will be a multimedia
presentation describing the introduction of rap to the island, its reception among youth,
the influences that shaped its development, and a look at the groups that exemplified
early rap Cubano.
Professor Garafolo teaches at the UMass/Boston College of Public and
Community Service. His most recent book is "Rockin Out: Popular Music in the
USA". He has written numerous articles on racism, censorship, the political uses of
music, and the globalization of the music industry.
Professor Pacini Hernandez teaches Latino Studies at Tufts University. She
is the author of "Bachata: A Social History of a Dominican Popular Music". She
has conducted field research in the Dominican Republic, Columbia, and Cuba and has written
numerous articles ion Spanish Caribbean and US Latino popular music.
This exciting event is free and open to the public. Presentations will be
in English with Spanish-language interpretation available. Cuban style food, courtesy of Macondo
restaurant in Somerville, will be offered following the presentations. ZUMIX is located at
202 Maverick Street in East Boston.
