Committee to Establish October as Italian Heritage Month

Designs created and implemented by Constantino Brumidi (1805-1880), "The Michelangelo of the US Capitol.

The Italian American Community the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been demonstrating a resurgence of great pride in the contributions made by their forebears in the 19th and 20th centuries, in almost every field of human endeavor.

Arts: Music, Painting, Theater, Sculpture, Cinematography, Writing, etc.

Science: Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Architecture and medicine

Business & Industry: Banking, Manufacturing, Agribusiness, and Construction

Sports: Baseball, Football, Soccer, Auto Racing, Cycling, etc.

Law and Public Service.

Now as we approach the new Millennium, we wish to review the cultural and economic contributions that have been and are still being made this very day.

In light of this revival of interest in our Italian heritage, it is fitting that approximately 40 associations have organized a committee to bring this message of cultural, social and economic progress to the public. To achieve this goal, many programs and activities pertaining to our rich culture, brought to America by our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents are being planned.

We, therefore, ask you to join with us to request your Municipal and State officials to join together at every level of government to declare the month of October as "Italian Heritage Month" and establish a plan to bring our message to the people of the Commonwealth by holding special events and activities throughout the month of October 1999 and every October thereafter.

Proudly submitted,

Hon. Joseph V. Ferrino (Ret.)
Committee Chairman
