ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

If you’ve walked through Maverick Square in the last week or so, you may have noticed something a little different. An art gallery in a realtors office? Not really, it’s a special exhibition of paintings by Maverick Square artist Jeannette Lazarus at Tony’s Realty.

East Boston Artists Group and ARTEXCHANGE are pleased to announce an exhibition of Jeannette’s paintings at Tony’s Realty in Maverick Square. A reception will be held on Friday May 4, 2001 from 7-10 pm at 37 Maverick Square in East Boston. The exhibition will run through May 15, 2001.

This is the first attempt by the group to exhibit works by local artists in a non-traditional gallery space. Jeannette Lazarus says "I approached Tony because we are neighbors in the Square and I thought his office would be perfect as a place to hang art. It took a little convincing, but he finally agreed." The art group would like to expand on this idea and hang shows in a number of local offices and businesses, in order to make their art more accessible and available to local residents.

Lazarus says "There aren’t a lot of gallery opportunities in East Boston. Zumix has been very supportive of our group and the local arts community and we continue to hang shows there, but we would like more people in East Boston to see our work. Tony’s Realty seemed like the perfect first step."

Jeannette’s oil paintings are still lifes of plants and fruit as well as two views out her studio window showing Maverick Square in the background. Using rich vibrant color, her four paintings of pears describe the light of early morning, mid-afternoon and evening. The largest canvas shows a beautiful foxglove on the brink of decay. As Jeannette says, "My compositions tend to be very simple. A bowl of fruit, or a common object that is casting a particularly intriguing shadow."

The public is cordially invited to attend the reception. For more information and directions, please contact Jeannette Lazarus at 617-569-1233.
