FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Take the free "Art Ferry" to the second annual East Boston Open StudiosGetting to East Boston has never been easier. On Saturday October 12 and Sunday October 13, you can catch the free "Art Ferry" water taxi, at Christopher Columbus Park in the North End (next to the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel) for the second annual East Boston Open Studios. Visitors are invited to tour the artist’s building and visit the exhibitions to talk to the artists, see them at work and learn about art. Original artwork will be available in all price ranges; choose from sculpture, handmade books, figurative and abstract painting, jewelry, drawings, photography, and much more. From noon to 6pm, the art ferry will shuttle visitors across the harbor to the Boston Harbor Marina in East Boston. At the marina, a free "Art Bus" will pick up passengers and make stops throughout the neighborhood at the art studio locations. Cassin/Winn sponsors the "Art Ferry" in conjunction with the East Boston Artists Group, the organizers of the Open Studios event. East Boston Open Studios will be held from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm. The starting point for T riders is Tony’s Realty located at 37 Maverick Square, just outside the Maverick T stop on the Blue Line. Maps of the studios and information about the participating artists will be available there. On exhibit at Tony’s Realty from October 1st through November 1st is a show of representative work, one piece from each participating East Boston Open Studios artist. This year nearly fifty artists are participating in Open Studios. They will be showing their processes and their creations in the artist’s studio building at 80 Border Street, in a group exhibition at the Jeffries Point Community Center at 425 Sumner Street, and at Zumix located at 202 Maverick Street. Come see what makes East Boston shine: the art, the people, and the vitality of life on Boston Harbor. This event is funded in part through a generous grant from The East Boston Foundation. Several special events will be held in conjunction with the East Boston Open Studios. On Saturday from 4pm to 6pm, artist Aaron Fry will present a temporary outdoor installation entitled "The Sheltering Sky" next to the 80 Border Street building. This work recognizes the status of the abandoned piers as shelter and refuge in the form of glowing paper tents. The tents, though temporary and useless as shelter, offer a warm glow that is both a beacon and a reminder of human vulnerability.
An art auction, with wonderfully affordable starting bids, will help support the East Boston High School art program. Held in the lobby of 80 Border Street from 6-8pm Sunday, the event will be a further chance to meet artists from the neighborhood and buy art through a silent auction. Bidding starts Saturday with the beginning of Open Studios and ends promptly at 7pm on Sunday. The participating East Boston Open Studios artists include: Ann Beckett; Flausto Blasco; Catherine Bowen; Kokko Bresilla; Patrick Burian; Caroline Phillips Buttner; Elsa Campbell; Theodore Catrell; Edward Ching; Chris Chou; Beth Cohen; Daphne Confar; Barbara Cowan; Deb Dila; Richard Dorff; Mary Dreitlein; Aaron Fry; Eric Hess; Laurie Hoffma; Jesse Kahn; Ed Killeen; June Krinsky-Rudder; Melissa Kulig; Jeannette Lazarus; Charlene Liska; Todd Maynard; Barbara Michaels; Maureen O’Connor; Moni Onghai; Sean O’Reilly; Eve Perkins; Bo Petran; Alberto Roblest; Ryan Ross; Fran Rowan; Joan Ryan; Anna Salmeron; Denise Shea; Loretta Shoemaker; Jun Shong; Michael St. Germain; Stefanie St. Germain; Katherine Sullivan; Paul Weiner; and Jaye Woodstock.
