A slide lecture by Gershon Weisenberg, lecturer in Humanities at the Worcester Art Museum and at the Adult Education Centers of Boston, Brookline and Newton. Artemisia Gentilleschi (1593-c1652) was a leading woman painter of this era and is best known for her violent scenes of Judith Slaying Holofernes (Uffizi, Florence, Italy, 1612-1613) and Susanna and the Elders (Schonborn Collection, Pommerfelden, German, 1610). Sofonisba Anguissola (1527-1625) was a portrait painter and a role model ot Italian women artists of this period. Her work --Three of the Artist's Sisters Playing Chess (National Museum, Poznan, Poland, 1955) -- has been labeled as the first "conversation piece" portrait.
