November 2, 2010 will be remembered as the day that the
guilty were punished.
It will be remembered as the day that wronged Americans were finally
made whole. It will be remembered as the day that victimized
citizens received the justice they demanded.
It will be remembered as the day that the malefactors who violated
the trust and the will of the American people faced the consequences
of their wanton actions. These miscreants acted with malice
aforethought, desecrating our democracy and committing felonies
against freedom.
These criminals were selfish and self-righteous, believing that they
had absolute power and authority to do what they did. They preyed
upon their victims, seeing them as worthless, thoughtless men and
women undeserving of basic respect.
The Washington criminal class stole our innocence and our liberty.
We’ll never be able to recapture the former, but on November 2, we
reclaim the latter.
There won’t be time to read a victim impact statement before
sentencing. Plus, the criminals we’re dealing with are so callous,
so amoral, that nothing we say to them would matter anyway.
We told them we didn’t want an expansion in the size and scope of
government. They didn’t listen.
We told them we didn’t want Washington dictating our health care
decisions. They didn’t care.
We told them to simply listen to the concerns of the American
people. They didn’t bother.
For these crimes, they have been prosecuted and found guilty. After
November 2, they will find themselves behind the bars of public
shame, imprisoned by their own arrogance, stripped of the power and
authority they so recklessly abused.
Justice has been a long time coming. Some of us thought it would
never come.
Nearly two years ago, when the Washington criminal class set upon
the American people, it appeared that these villains would never pay
the price for their actions. It seemed that too few people
recognized the true extent of their crimes.
Gradually, however, more and more people became aware. Victims
stepped forward to describe how their businesses and finances had
been attacked by these lawbreakers. Americans from all walks of life
came together to insist upon justice.
These noble Americans acted as citizen-prosecutors, introducing
evidence showing beyond all reasonable doubt that Washington was
guilty of assaulting the free-market system. It was their vigilance,
their effort, their hard work, their courage that led us to this
moment.
It’s a travesty that these noble Americans have been subjected to
such scurrilous attacks merely because they seek justice. How many
times have these noble Americans been compared to an old-school
lynch mob, simply because they oppose policies that reduce wealth
and destroy jobs?
Despite all the rhetorical attacks, despite all the demonization,
despite all the smears, these noble Americans kept fighting. They
would not quit until their dreams of justice became a reality.
On November 2, that dream will be realized. The thieves of freedom
will themselves be deprived of the ability to defraud the American
people. The members of Washington’s criminal class—the con artists
and swindlers whose schemes exceeded Bernard Madoff’s wildest
fantasies—will begin serving their sentences. Their victims—assailed
for two years by their depravity and deception—will finally begin to
heal.
It’s not often that justice can be found in a political realm.
That’s what makes this moment so special. This time, the wrongdoers
can’t get away with their crimes. This time, the good guys win.
