Mayor Menino and Public Works Department Announce Street Sweeping Changes:
Fri, 23 Dec 2011 16:18:14
Neighborhoods will see cleaner streets due to better coordination with trash collection schedule Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Public Works Department today announced new changes to the City of Boston’s street sweeping program to better coordinate with weekly trash collection. Over the next two years, the City will phase in changes that ensure most streets are swept either one or two days after trash collection. Additionally, in the South End neighborhood, the program will run longer by two months, operating from March to December each year instead of April to November as in previous years. “It has always been a very high priority for my administration to keep our wonderful city clean,” Mayor Menino said. “We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our daily operations and by realigning the street sweeping schedule to match the weekly trash collection operations, we’re smartly maximizing the potential of each program to keep our streets clean.” To prepare for the beginning of the 2012 street sweeping season, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) has updated street signs in South Boston, East Boston and Charlestown. Beginning in January, city crews will replace every sign in the South End to add two months (March and December) to the annual street sweeping program and change sweeping days to follow trash collection more closely. Later this winter signs in Roxbury, Allston and Brighton will be replaced to reflect the new changes as well. Residents who are concerned about remembering the new changes should sign up for the City of Boston’s Know Tow automated alert system that reminds users to move their cars the night before their street is swept so they are not towed via a host of methods – text message, phone call or email.

Coakley; repeal at the ballot a no-go
Sun, 18 Dec 2011 13:41:20
State House News Service: In a blow to casino opponents who are running out of options to stop the expansion of gaming in Massachusetts, Attorney General Martha Coakley on Wednesday ruled that a proposed referendum to repeal the new law allowing casinos and slots cannot legally be placed on the ballot. Coakley wrote in a ruling to Secretary of State William Galvin on Wednesday that the law signed by Gov. Deval Patrick last month was “not lawfully the subject of a referendum petition” because it included at least two monetary appropriations that are exempt from voter repeal efforts. News: Citizen effort to repeal casino deal moves forward
Wed, 7 Dec 2011 18:00:08
Tuesday, November 29th, 2011, Boston, MA - A diverse group of citizens from across the state today made the first step to launch a referendum petition on the controversial casino bill recently signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick. John Ribeiro of Winthrop, head of the newly formed ballot committee Repeal the Casino Deal, filed the required ten voter signatures with the Secretary of State’s Office. Under the Massachusetts Constitution, citizens have the right to challenge bad laws through the petition process. The number of certified signatures required to get on the ballot is 1½% of the votes cast in the 2010 statewide election for Governor which the Secretary of State has calculated to be 34,456. The entire process needs to be completed in a 90 period following the signing of the bill into law. If successful, Bay Staters will have the opportunity to cast their vote on the issue as part of the November 2012 ballot. It will be up to Attorney General Martha Coakley to ultimately decide whether the casino bill can go before voters. The drafters of H.3807 inserted language making incidental “appropriations” to the Governor, the Attorney General and the non-existent Gaming Commission to position the bill as a “appropriation” that is excluded from the referendum process. "This is one of the most significant laws passed in Massachusetts in over a hundred years,” Ribeiro said. “Gambling interests have spent more than $20 million to have their way. Now it is time for citizens to get their say.” To get involved with the petition effort, contact John Ribeiro at 617-701-7823 or RepealTheCasinoDeal@gmail.com.

Dorchester Reporter 11/22 : "Another option is the one preferred by Mayor Thomas Menino and some of East Boston’s elected officials: Limiting the decision to voters in the single ward that would host a proposed casino. Menino told Channel 5 that he supports the position of state Sen. Anthony Petruccelli, a Democrat from East Boston, where a casino could be sited on the grounds of the Suffolk Downs race track. Menino and Petruccelli argue that East Boston, not the entire city, should have a say in whether or not a casino goes up within its borders."

Sousa starred at East Boston in the mid-1960s, captaining the 1968 squad. He spent 17 years as an assistant at Boston English before accepting the coaching job at his alma mater in 1995. Councilor Linehan Announces Additional Redistricting Hearing at Mattapan Library on November 10th
Tue, 1 Nov 2011 20:07:44
The Boston City Council’s Committee on Census & Redistricting has held five community hearings to date to discuss the redistricting process at locations throughout the City over the months of September and October. District 2 City Councilor and Committee Chair Bill Linehan called for the hearings in order to solicit feedback from community leaders and residents active in their neighborhoods. He has added one additional hearing to be held on Thursday, November 10th at the Mattapan Brach Library. The Census & Redistricting Committee is charged with reviewing the results of the U.S. Census figures, overseeing voter participation levels and the process of redistricting. The Committee held a public hearing at City Hall in May but Councilor Linehan felt the need to bring the Council to the neighborhoods and gather more input from residents in advance of any changes to the current Council boundaries. “It is imperative that these sessions are attended by a diverse group of residents” Linehan explains. “Folks should come to voice their opinion and state criteria they feel is important to drawing a new district map.” Given the 2010 Census results and the current delineation of Council districts, it is clear that many neighborhoods will be impacted and likely to see changes to the current City Council boundaries. While Boston experienced a significant population growth from 2000, up nearly 5% (589,141- 617,594), only five of nine districts located in the northern sections of the City saw the increases. The new district map will be in effect for the next ten years. Councilor Linehan encourages all residents to make every effort to attend this additional hearing and offer testimony related to the redistricting process: Thursday, November 10th 6-8pm, Mattapan Branch Library, 1350 Blue Hill Ave.

Rep. Carlo Basile Supports DeLeo Probation Reform Package
Wed, 11 May 2011 22:59:00
Rep. Basile votes for Speaker DeLeo's Judicial and Probation Department Reform

(BOSTON) – State Representative Carlo Basile today joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in unanimously passing landmark court reorganization legislation aimed at improving efficiency in the state’s court system and bringing transparency to hiring and promotion at the Department of Probation. The legislation, passed by a vote of 152-0, signals strong collaboration between the legislative and judicial branches to provide a streamlined system of justice and restore public trust in the state’s Probation Department.

“This major reform legislation will improve upon an already strong court system by facilitating a more efficient and cost-effective infrastructure for the disposition of justice,” House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo said. “Not only does this bill create a civilian administrator to oversee the business aspects of the Trial Court, but it also adds needed transparency to the hiring and promotion practices at the Department of Probation. By passing this reorganization bill, the House has committed to bring a more transparent, efficient system of justice to the people of Massachusetts.” "This proposal will increase accountability and improve the efficiency of our Trial Court," said Representative Eugene L. O'Flaherty, House Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

"The Speaker and the SJC worked together to provide transparency to the hiring process in our Trial Court and improve its administration. This measure will go a long way in improving confidence and morale." “This legislation is cost efficient, and will undoubtedly be an effective way to strengthen our justice system,” said Representative Carlo Basile.

Led by community members, the workshops are open to all and promise to be an engaging mix of hands-on education and fun! The series will also be linked to a Stir a Memory event, happening on April 7 at the Harborside School, which will engage participants in artistically expressing a favorite food-related memory and explore the cultural link between food and good health. “Food is such an important part of community, and East Boston is no exception,” said Cait Van Damm, co-coordinator of the Community Food Workshop Series. “We hope these events will be allow us all to come together, be inspired and learn something new – and yummy!” The series is sponsored by Healthy on the Block/Saludable en tu tienda, an East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and Boston Public Health Commission initiative to increase access to fresh produce and whole grains in corner stores. For more information regarding the Healthy on the Block/Saludable en tu tienda project or the Community Food Workshop Series, contact Cait Van Damm at 617-568-4028 or vandammc@ebnhc.org. Dates and workshop descriptions are listed below: • March 3 – The Power of Local: East Boston fair food advocates will discuss the global and local food systems, explain why local gives us more options and is better for our community, and share ways you can get involved in their diverse projects. • April 7 – Stir a Memory: explore the artistic and emotional connection between culture, health, and food! Local artist Krina Patel will be facilitating a public recipe art project. Cooking demonstrations and games will also add to the fun! • Food Justice 101 and more: explore how different social circumstances often dictate health through food, and fun ways to help fix this problem! • April 25 – Container Gardening and Seed Starting!: community leaders will delve into the basics of how to get growing in your own backyard and provide a source of food, community, health and fun!
