THE MAVERICK STATION MESS
by Paul Howes
It is an absolute disgrace how the MBTA has again treated the
taxpayers of East Boston. After scheduling a public
meeting and later "apologizing" for forgetting, not notifying
the public of the meeting, the MBTA cut over $20 million dollars
from the Maverick Station upgrade.
As any daily commuter knows, the degredating Maverick
Station Blue Line is an eyesore. Gray spray painted walls
abound. There is a black-spray painted ceiling that shows the
old cracked, scraped deteriorating concrete in even more detail.
Blacktop, no tiling, leaking ceilings over the escalator
Taking the Silver line from Logan to the Federal Courthouse
station yesterday at 5:30pm was a different experience all
together. I was the only one to get off at that stop. What
a beautiful MBTA station! Mosaics on the walls, artwork, all
tiled, stainless steel ceilings, and amazing lighting, with
color lights illuminating in artistic color, spotless clean.
One MBTA employee I talked to at the Federal Courthouse
Station about how money talks and &!~#*f# walks. I was told that
after evening hours the station is barren. What was the amount
the MBTA spent on the Silver Line's Federal Court Station --
-$100, $200, or $300 million? I don't remember
The Maverick Station in East Boston that has a thousand times
more use and serves the local public on a daily basis, seven
days a week, 365 days a year. Now it has apparently been put on
the back burner as the under funded, poor quality of materials
and lack of oversight and caring of our local publicly elected
officials should be in the spotlight.
The MBTA has been lying to the public for years. Why should this
surprise anyone who can see once again that East Boston has
again been walked upon.
