BCYF’S FREE SPORTS CENTERS OFFER SUMMER FUN FOR EAST BOSTON YOUTH

(BOSTON- July 25, 2012) As the third week of summer programming comes to a close, Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Daphne Griffin, Boston’s Chief of Human Services and Boston Centers for Youth & Families’ (BCYF) Executive Director, remind Boston residents that BCYF’s offers three free daily citywide sports centers throughout the summer.

Located at Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park, White Stadium at Franklin Park and Moakley Park in South Boston, the sports centers offer boys and girls ages 7-14 the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports. Activities offered differ slightly by location but may include: baseball/softball, tennis, basketball, football, golf and soccer as well as a variety of non-sports recreational activities.

“Our sports centers give young children the opportunity to try out a variety of sports in a fun, non-competitive environment,” said Daphne Griffin. “While the kids are having fun learning new sports and making friends, they are also enhancing their skills in social interaction, physical conditioning, and psychological development.”

Daily registration is accepted but pre-registration is preferred. The BCYF East Boston Summer Recreation & Sports Center and the BCYF Moakley Park Sports Center begin each day at 9 a.m. The BCYF White Stadium Sports Center begins at 8:30 a.m. The East Boston and Moakley Centers are only a couple years old but the White Stadium Sports Center has been operating for 21 years! For more information and to get the registration form for each sports center, visit www.cityofboston.gov/bcyf.

In addition to the sports centers, BCYF offers over 50 summer day camps, dozens of recreations programs and many special events as part of the Boston R.O.C.K.S!!! summer programming campaign. Now in its sixth year, Boston R.O.C.K.S!!! (Recreational Opportunities for City Kids,) is aimed at connecting Boston youth with programs and activities. Led by BCYF, the signature programs for R.O.C.K.S!!! are free daily drop-in programs at ten locations in Boston called “Boston R.O.C.K.S Out!!!” and family-friendly cookouts at different BCYF swimming pools each week called “Boston R.O.C.K.S the Block!!!”
