From the Office of City Councilor Sal LaMattina: BPD issues two advisories for East Boston

Captain Frank Mancini, commander of the District 7 police station, has released a pair of advisories -- reprinted below -- that deal with safety and security in East Boston, and I want to pass those along to you. The first deals with motor vehicle break-ins throughout the neighborhood, and the second with burglaries, especially in the Eagle Hill area. By following the steps outlined below you can make it much less likely that your car or home will be targeted. Please contact my office at 617-635-3200 or Salvatore.LaMattina@cityofboston.gov if I can be of assistance.

***BOSTON POLICE SECURITY ADVISORY***
East Boston

This neighborhood is experiencing a high level of motor vehicle break-ins and theft of electronic items including iPods, laptop computers, stereos and other valuables left in plain view inside automobiles. Most notably, professional thieves are stealing GPS devices and other electronic items from cars at an unprecedented rate. Please take the following steps to secure your valuable possessions:

-Do not park in isolated areas such as alleys

-Park in well lit areas

-Lock your vehicle

-Remove all items from view in passenger compartment

-Secure items in your trunk or take them with you

-Remove all electronic devices from view and secure in trunk or take with you

-Always remove GPS and take with you or lock in trunk

-Remove any evidence of suction device on windshield, as professional thieves inspect windshields for this suction ring and will break into your car looking for the GPS

-Remove from public view any clips or holders of GPS devices

-Be especially attentive if parking your car overnight or for an extended period

-Register the serial number of your valuable electronic devices by contacting the District 7 Community Service Office, Sgt. George Carino, 617-343-4752

-Remember to always call 911 to report any suspicious persons in your neighborhood

***BOSTON POLICE BURGLARY ADVISORY ***
Eagle Hill neighborhood of East Boston

Recently there has been an increase in residential burglaries in the Eagle Hill neighborhood. Items such as laptops, iPods, cell phones, jewelry and cash, as well as other items of value, have been stolen from apartments and single- and two-family houses. The area impacted most is the Eagle Hill community. These breaks are occurring mainly during the daytime when residents are away at work or school. Many times the entry point is through an open or unlocked window in the rear or side alley of a building, as well as unlocked doors to apartments. To avoid being victimized, please take the following precautions to secure your property and possessions. Always call 911 immediately when a suspicious person is on your or your neighbor’s property, and make note of the physical description and direction of flight of the perpetrator.

-Lock all doors and windows when leaving for the day

-Install security bars on your windows, especially near fire-escape access

-If away for the night or weekend, leave a light on

-Leave radio turned on when away

-Do not buzz unknown people into apartment buildings

-Report all broken locks and windows to management or landlord immediately

-Do not make duplicate keys for your friends

-Call 911 immediately if you suspect an intruder has entered an apartment or house and give an accurate description to responding officers

-Register your electronic devices and computers online with the Boston Police www.Trace.Com, where you can search for your stolen items online and register your property for easier recovery if they are stolen and a more likely arrest of the thief.

-For more information or a security survey of your property, contact the District 7 Community Service Office, Sgt. George Carino, 617-343-4752
